Henri De Toulouse-Lautrec (1864–1901) Achieved Fame With His Unvarnished Scenes Depicting The Pulsating Parisian Nightlife Inmontmartre . His Paintings And Prints Were Often Interpreted As Illustrations Of The Circumstances Of The Time Around The Turn Of The Century Or Seen In The Context Of Their Settings, As If The Importance Of The Works Rested On The Frivolous Conditions Under Which They Were Produced.
This Publication Sheds Light On Toulouse-Lautrec’S Unique Oeuvre Solely Under Artistic Points Of View And Focuses On A Previously Little-Noticed Facet: His Exacting Portrayal Of Modern Man’S Inner Conflicts And Isolation. The Approximately Seventy Works Show The Artist As A Sensitive Observer Of These Tensions. At The Same Time, However, His Oeuvre Is An Expression Of His Role As An Outsider Deriving From His Privileged Aristocratic Country Background As Well As His Physical Disabilities.
Exhibition Schedule: Landesgalerie Linz, February 28–June 7, 2009
